Paper mache

My interest in paper maché sculpture started in 1977 after seeing the famous cantina scene in Star Wars. "Cool Dad ! How did they do that?" I got a quick tutorial on paper mache, then equipped with paste and a stack of newspaper, I went on to make creatures of my own. My first projects as a kid were scary heads to attach to halloween dummies, and the gory severed arm like the one Obi-Wan chopped off with his lightsaber.

Kif Kroker

This sculpture started as a paper maché demo for my daughter, the standard paste and balloon project. It quickly grew arms and legs, and rather than build the nondescript grey alien that I have done a dozen times, I decided to pay homage to that poor unappreciated alien, Kif from Futuarma.

mengus the alien

I made several of these and was never able to keep any of them, people always pleaded for them. Mengus, the last and best of the bunch lived for several years guarding my friend Jodi's coffee shop-- until he was finally abducted.

My first 3-D character. A life-size paper mache man.
